National Hospital Cost Data Collection

Date published: 27 June 2014

The National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) is a valuable tool for use across the Australian health system as it plays a large role in collating the vast majority of health system costs at a 'product' level. It has recently been defined as a remarkable evidence base and unique in the world.

The NHCDC counts each patient episode for a sample of Australian hospitals and then a representative number of the episodes are costed as a primary input into the national efficient price and national efficient cost. In addition, separate costing studies are undertaken in relation to some areas that are under developed or where directed by external parties.
