AR-DRG Version 8.0

Date published: 1 July 2015

The Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Group (AR-DRG) Version 8.0 was implemented from July 1, 2016 and is the Australian Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) patient classification system that provides a clinically meaningful way of relating the types of patients treated in the hospital to the resources required by the hospital. AR-DRGs incorporate the ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS.

The AR-DRG Version 8.0 is published as a set of three Definition Manuals described below.

Definitions Manual Volume One (DRGs A13A – I80Z)

The Definitions Manual Volume One provides a high level understanding of DRG grouping logic for DRGs ranging from A13A to I80Z and assists with the identification of DRG assignments for those individual episodes of care.

Definitions Manual Volume Two (DRGs J01A – Z66Z)

The Definitions Manual Volume Two provides a high level understanding of DRG grouping logic for DRGs ranging from J01A to Z66Z and assists with the identification of DRG assignments for those individual episodes of care.

Definitions Manual Volume Three (Appendices)

The Definitions Manual Volume Three contains detailed lists of both diagnosis and intervention codes used in the AR-DRG Version 8.0 classification:

  • Appendix A – Diagnosis Code/MDC/ADRG Index
  • Appendix B – Intervention Code/ MDC/ADRG Index
  • Appendix C – Diagnosis Complexity Level Exclusions
  • Appendix D – Age and Sex Conflicts
  • Appendix E – General Interventions.

The Appendices A and B list out the diagnosis and intervention codes, and their corresponding Major Diagnostic Categories (MDC) and Adjacent Diagnosis Related Groups (ADRGs) which they can group to. The remaining appendices include specific lists of codes such as the Diagnosis Complexity Level exclusions, age & sex conflict, and general interventions.
