National Coding Advice

Date published: 16 September 2024

National Coding Advice are the Coding Rules and frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the new edition. These are published to facilitate nationally consistent assignment of ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes in the implemented edition of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS. National Coding Advice is generally published quarterly.

The publication of a new Coding Rule, or response to an FAQ, is applicable for separations beginning the following month. For example, those published on 16 September 2024 are applicable for separations from 1 October 2024.

National Coding Advice is maintained on the Australian Classification Exchange (ACE) website, a searchable database which has a list of current and updated Coding Rules and FAQs.

Clinical updates

Clinical updates have been developed for clinical coding education and can be used over multiple editions, where appropriate. Previously the clinical updates were located under National Coding Advice but as they are for education purposes only, and do not contain coding guidelines, they are now provided separately.
